Breakfast talk with Andrew Waugh
Designing spaces for creatives - Wednesday 5th December
Andrew Waugh of Waugh Thistleton Architects
Sugar House Island’s cosmopolitan team of creatives is drawn from diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise. We have invited members of the Sugar House Island team to tell us more about their work and involvement with the project.
We asked Andrew to tell us a bit ABOUT himself ahead of his talk
What made you become an architect?
I grew up in Milton Keynes and saw the city grow up around me - it gave a clear idea of the exciting possibilities of architecture.... that and a love of Lego!
What do you like most about the job?
I am constantly fascinated by architecture, constantly learning. The process of design is wonderful - working with other architects, engineers and clients - the constant sense of ambition to make the best building possible.
What has been your most interesting project so far?
In 2008 we built our first - the first - tall timber building, the lessons we learnt on that project we are still building on.
And the most difficult?
My home! I’m always seeing things I should have done differently!
What do you think of Sugar House Island?
Such a fabulous project, the ambition to create what is in effect a new community alongside a really talented group of designers and a really invested client is very exciting… and the building themselves in the commercial quarter are very inspiring - knitting new buildings into the old - making something new while retaining the qualities and character of the existing!
